Fun with archaic materials!!
I got hold of some Glair, basic earth pigments, and some lapis pigment so I bought some gold leaf to go with it and had a bit of an adventure. Glair is a 14th century painting medium made of egg whites, it handles like a cross between gouache and egg tempera.
This one was taken from the Visconti Book of Hours (Catholic prayer book that was a common prized artified possession of the rich if you aren't familiar). I figured birds and a painting medium made of eggs were a good fit... this has the gold leafing as the vine work (not a good idea as a first try activity)
